Ada Lovelace Day 2009 – Caroline Haslett

March 23, 2009

I promised to make a blog post for Ada Lovelace Day. Here it is – sorry it’s short:

I was named after Caroline Haslett, because my mother admired her. Caroline Haslett was an Englishwoman who trained as an electrical engineer during the First World War. After the war, she got a job organising the Women’s Engineering Society and, a few years later, she co-founded the Electrical Association for Women. She was a pioneer for women in the electrical and professional world. Her particular interest was electricity, and how this might benefit women by liberating them from household drudgery. In the early 1920s, few houses had electric light or heating, let alone electrical appliances; the National Grid was not yet in existence.
.
There’s plenty of information about Caroline Haslett on Wikipedia:

Internet blackout New Zealand no longer operating

March 23, 2009

I’ve unhidden my previous posts as the New Zealand Internet blackout is no longer operating.

The Creative Freedom Foundation reports that S92A has been scrapped http://creativefreedom.org.nz/story.html?id=231 and now begins the task to make sensible laws.

I’ve hidden all my previous posts in support of Internet Blackout NZ…

…because if it can happen in New Zealand it can happen here.

Do you want to risk losing your internet connections and websites if you are accused (not convicted) of copyright infringement? That’s what will become legal in New Zealand if the new law isn’t withdrawn by 28 February. Select the link below to read more about it!

Hello world!

August 30, 2008

Well, here I am.  Enjoying the luxury of being online at home so I don’t need to spend hours of my weekend in Internet cafes.  Enjoying hearing live music from Moseley Folk Festival through my window.  Life is good! I just wish I didn’t feel a summer cold coming on – persistent sneezing, runny nose, sore throat…
